TSP Market Summary: Week of December 12, 2020

By Roy Weisert, PhD, CFP

Key Takeaways

  • All TSP equity funds (C, S, I) hit new record highs despite S&P 500's first weekly drop
  • S fund gaining strength in performance rankings, prompting increased allocation recommendation
  • Bullish trend continues with all equity funds trading above key moving averages

It has finally arrived!! The week started with the UK rolling out the first round of COVID-19 vaccines, which brought high market closes on Tuesday with the S&P 500 crossing above the 3700 threshold for the first time ever. With this week’s employment data worse than expected and more states increasing COVID lockdowns, it made for a perfect equation for a stimulus deal. However, those talks stalled out again and the S&P 500 posted its first weekly decline in three weeks, ending Friday’s session at 3663. And then the good news arrived!! On Friday evening, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration authorized the first COVID vaccine with hopefully the first doses delivered sometime this weekend. For TSP TIPS, all the equity funds (S/C/I) hit new record highs this week and remain bullish with their prices above their 50 Moving Average (MA), which is above its 200 day MA. The S fund did gain some strength in the performance ranking over the last few weeks so we’re recommending an increased allocation to that fund.<br>Changing things up a bit, in the past I’ve mentioned about our new offering called “The TIPS” bundle. We have now renamed it to ProFunds TIPS since it utilizes the ProFunds fund family. ProFunds TIPS is comprised of three different models, but the one that mimics TSP TIPS most is Classic TIPS. Classic TIPS utilizes index funds just like the TSP, however, it differs in that it offers a much larger selection of index funds, allows daily reallocations, and can also be utilized by anyone with individual/joint accounts and/or Roth/Traditional IRA’s. 1) If you have an IRA, 2) are getting ready to retire and are looking for somewhere to rollover your TSP, or 3) want to take a TSP “Age-Based Withdrawal”, you may want to consider this as an option. The Year-To Date (YTD) return on the Classic TIPS model has been 25%, while the other Ultra TIPS and Sector TIPS models have been 37% and 20% respectively. If you’re interested in ProFunds TIPS, we have a free pilot offer still available at weisertinvestments.com/-the-tips-.html.
