TSP Market Summary: Week of November 18, 2017

By Roy Weisert, PhD, CFP

Key Takeaways

  • Markets saw high volatility with Wednesday sell-off followed by Thursday rebound
  • Small cap performance improvement suggests tactical shift from international to S fund
  • Tax bill uncertainty remains key market driver heading into year-end

The S&P 500 closed the week at 2578, almost exactly where it closed last Friday. However, the markets were anything but flat throughout the week with a big sell off on Wednesday, followed by a big rebound on Thursday. The uncertain future of the tax bill was the macro story this week and will surely have impacts on the market as we close out 2017. With TSP TIPS, we have seen a slight improvement in Small Cap performance, so we are recommending a “small” five percent shift from the “I” to “S” fund. Finally, the markets will be closed on Thursday with a half day on Friday due to the Thanksgiving holiday, which we hope you all will enjoy.
