TSP Market Summary: Week of January 27, 2018

By Roy Weisert, PhD, CFP

Key Takeaways

  • January 2018 shows best stock market start since 1987 with S&P 500 reaching new records
  • All TSP equity funds hit record highs four Fridays straight, with C fund showing strength
  • Upcoming earnings reports could drive markets higher, supporting continued equity performance

The S&P 500 closed at the record high price of 2872 Friday after a good GDP report. January 2018 is on pace to be the best month since October 2015 and has been the best start to the stock market since 1987. Next week earnings season continues with hopefully continued strong results which may drive the market higher. With the TSP funds, all three TSP equity funds closed with records on Friday, which makes it four Fridays in a row (January 5th, 12th, 19th, 26th) with records for all three funds. For allocation purposes, we still have one available so we are recommending a slight reallocation of 40% C and 30% S and I since the C fund has a slightly stronger performance ranking.
